Growing demand for innovative and sustainable civil solutions
Product range includes uncrewed watercraft and innovations for protecting critical infrastructure, detecting and disposing of contaminated sites, and marine surveying
Fuel cell expertise can contribute to green transformation
NXTGEN will be positioned on the market as an independent company in the future
With the establishment of the new operating unit NXTGEN Engineering, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is expanding its range to include new, innovative products and services, positioning itself as a solution provider in the growing civil market. NXTGEN has already been launched as a new operating unit and will soon be spun off from thyssenkrupp Marine Systems as an independent company.
“Demand for intelligent and sustainable civil solutions is growing. With NXTGEN we are meeting this demand and thus also contributing to the sustainable development of the world’s oceans,” emphasizes Oliver Burkhard, CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. “With our expertise from numerous complex maritime projects, we can already offer products and services for the future. We will use the next few years to develop new NXTGEN products and services.”
The expertise of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems in the civilian market is based to a large extent on its extensive experience and broad product portfolio in the high-tech area of shipbuilding. NXTGEN products, for example uncrewed systems, are derived directly from the current portfolio. They can be used in the civilian sector to protect critical infrastructure, detect and dispose of contaminated sites in the sea, or for marine surveying. The new NXTGEN operating unit brings these competencies together under one roof and will operate as an interdisciplinary “innovation hub” where new high-tech solutions can be developed in an agile and user-oriented manner.
Lisa Thormann, Head of NXTGEN, states: “One of the projects we are pushing ahead with is the concept for industrial clearance and disposal of unexploded ordnances. The concept we have developed covers the entire process chain from detection to disposal, with the involvement of local medium-sized partners. Together we are counting on an early order.”
In addition, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is already the world market leader in the use of H2 fuel cells in the maritime sector. NXTGEN combines this expertise with the needs of the energy transition in the area of “power-to-X” applications, i.e. the conversion of electricity into other energy sources that can be used across sectors. The first solutions for this are already being designed.
In recent years thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has acquired new sites in Germany and abroad and is examining the extent to which these sites can make the best possible contribution to supporting the energy transition, also in the sense of NXTGEN. As one of the few maritime systems houses with extensive engineering capabilities, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems focuses on solutions for complex issues in the field of marine technology.
